Take a moment to check out what you’re really drinking…….Many people today are drinking soy milk or almond milk instead of real cow’s milk. Soy and almond are not milk at all and should not be labeled as so. Cow’s milk is much higher in protein and calcium and will actually help you lose weight. Look at nutrition labels before you try an alternative to ‘real milk’. Milk does a body good. For more info, check out the facebook page “They Don’t Got Milk”.

Gov. Schwarzenegger is in the process of deciding whether to pass or veto SB1121 regarding overtime to farm workers after 8 hours instead of the current 10 hours. If passed, this will make a big impact on our family dairy. Our 13 employees work an average of 12 hours a day in order to get the required daily work completed. Adding 2 hours additional overtime to each of them would cause a great increase in our payroll expense. We would be forced to cut their hours and hire additional part time employees, which would be a hardship to our employees and to ourselves. Wage laws in other industries just cannot be compared to those in farming. Farming is very unpredictable, depending on the weather and harvest seasons. The hours vary from day to day. This bill would be yet another obstacle in our already challenging business.

A topic that seems to come up alot lately is the concern of antibiotics in your dairy products. Let me put your mind at ease…. The few cows that we give antibiotics to are milked separately from the rest of the herd and that milk is not used for human consumption. The rest of the milk that does go to the creamery is tested before it even leaves the milk truck to ensure that no traces of antibiotics are found. If it is, our milk would be turned away (This has not happened to us). We drink our milk too and would not want to harm ourselves or our children. We go above and beyond to produce one of the healthiest drinks for our bodies.

The Ohio cow cruelty video paints a horrific picture of the dairy industry. This is NOT how CA dairyman treat their cows.

We are 3rd generation dairy farmers and take great pride in our cows. They are our livelyhood and we take great measures to keep them healthy and comfortable. We supply soft bedding for them to lay in and feed them home grown food. We keep close connection with our dairy nutritionist to ensure ultimate health for our cows.

This past year we have struggled financially, losing thousands of hard earned dollars each month. In spite of this, we continue in the business because we love what we do.

If possible, take time to visit one of your local dairies to reassure yourself that not all animals are treated like those in the video. We have zero tolerance for that kind of treatment on our family farm! I know a fellow dairyman who fired their employee on the spot for mistreating a cow. We would do the same.
